A legal notice should not be ignored, but it also should not trigger a rushed response. The first task is to understand what is being demanded, the deadline and the documents behind the dispute.
Preserve the full notice
Keep the complete notice, envelope or delivery record, attachments and any earlier correspondence.
Record the deadline
If the notice specifies a response date, note it immediately. Some matters may also involve statutory, contractual or procedural deadlines that are not obvious from the notice alone.
Do not destroy or alter records
Preserve relevant agreements, messages, invoices, receipts, emails and internal records.
Get advice before sending an emotional reply
A response can affect later negotiations or proceedings. A lawyer can help separate factual corrections, legal objections, settlement points and documents that should or should not be disclosed.
